The bright, minty opening
Peppermint from the Willamette Valley gives Tradewinds its bright, minty lift, the first thing you notice when the blend opens. It reads clean and cool rather than sweet, and it sets the fresh character the eucalyptus meets.
Cooling eucalyptus radiata
The cooling side of Tradewinds comes from Eucalyptus radiata, grown in Australia and often called the narrow-leaved peppermint. It smells fresh, camphorous and clean, softer than the sharper eucalyptus oils, and it sits right beside the peppermint at the start.
A citrus-floral lift
Petitgrain brings a fresh, citrusy, floral note to Tradewinds, close to neroli but lighter. It's the leaf-and-twig oil of the bitter-orange tree, grown in Paraguay, a distilled oil and not a pressed peel.
Sweet Bulgarian lavender
Bulgarian lavender is the sweet, floral, fruity note that softens the fresh top of the blend. This is true lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, and it rounds the brighter oils so Tradewinds reads soft rather than sharp.
Warm, fruity chamomile
German Chamomile adds a sweet, fruity, herbaceous warmth to Tradewinds, steam distilled from the flowering tops in Egypt. This is the blue chamomile, and its soft warmth fills in behind the florals.
The woody depth that holds it
Copaiba is the soft, sweet, woody oil that holds the lighter notes together while the blend opens. It's steam distilled from the tapped balsam of the copaiba tree in Brazil, not from its wood. It lingers longest of the six after the fresh opening fades.
How to use
Diffuser
In the airAdd 3 to 5 drops of Tradewinds to a water diffuser for a medium room, then a drop at a time until the scent suits you. Run it for 30 to 60 minutes, then rest the room for the same time with some fresh air moving. Keep the blend off the faces of babies and young children, since the peppermint and eucalyptus are strong for the youngest, and keep the oils where children and pets cannot reach them.
On the skin
DilutedDilute Tradewinds to 1 to 2 percent before it touches skin, which is about 6 to 12 drops in 30 ml of a carrier oil like jojoba, counting roughly 20 drops to the milliliter. Keep it lower on the face, around 3 to 6 drops in 30 ml. German Chamomile is in the daisy family, so if ragweed bothers you, patch test on the inner forearm and wait a day before wider use. We never use this blend neat, and it is not for internal use.
Bath
In the waterStir 4 to 6 drops of Tradewinds into a tablespoon of carrier oil or an unscented bath oil, then add it once the tub is full. Oil and water don't mix on their own, so the carrier is what lets the drops reach your skin diluted, not neat. Swirl the water before you get in.

Method. Drop the Tradewinds and lemon into your diffuser and run it for 30 to 60 minutes in a medium room. Begin with fewer drops and build up slowly to the strength you like.
Method. Stir the drops into the carrier oil, which brings the blend to about 2 percent. Dab a little on your inner forearm and give it a day before you use more, and keep it off the face and off broken skin.
Method. Blend the drops into the carrier oil first, then swirl it through a full, warm tub as you step in. Oil floats on water, and the carrier oil spreads the blend across the bath instead of letting it sit neat on top.
